Welcome to California State Library

Welcome From the State Librarian of California

Susan Hildreth - State Librarian of California
We at the California State Library, a great California institution since 1850, know that informing our state is empowering our state.

The California State Library serves California by quickly and accurately providing the state's elected officials, government employees, and members of the public the information they need to build our state's future.

Today's California State Library enhances California's communities and libraries in easily recognizable ways. Library Development Services, the California Research Bureau, and State Library Services that includes the Information Resources and Government Publications section, the Witkin State Law Library, the Sutro Branch Library and the Braille and Talking Book Library, provide financial aid, consulting and research assistance, and information access services that strengthen the lives of all Californians.

The California Cultural and Historic Endowment within the California State Library enriches California by giving its residents a deeper understanding of the history and culture of California's communities.

At the California State Library, our services are diverse, but our mission is not. Whether you are a government employee or elected official using our electronic databases at your desktop, a library professional seeking advice on a new program or a member of the public exploring California's precious cultural treasures in our Sacramento and San Francisco branches, we're here to serve you – welcome to your State Library!
