U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner in Sacramento August 11

The California Research Bureau is involved in special projects with partners in the Legislature and various State agencies.

The California Research Bureau partnered with the California Department of Finance/Demographic Research Unit and the UC Center Sacramento to present a lunch seminar by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner Dr. Keith Hall on the U.S. Economy August 11, 2009.

Among other observations, Dr. Hall noted that the nation is now seeing a moderation in job loss. "Economies don't just flip around," he said. "You see moderation first. It's good news."

Dr. Hall has served as BLS Commissioner within the U.S. Department of Labor since his Senate confirmation January, 2008. He was previously Chief Economist for the White House Council of Economic Advisers, and Chief Economist for the U.S. Department of Commerce.

BLS is responsible for some of the key price and employment measures which determine economic performance and shape policy responses to economic change. Among chief BLS measures are: the consumer price index (CPI), the producer price index (PPI), the employment cost index (ECI), the payroll jobs report and the current population survey (CPS), which provides the official federal measure of unemployment.
