Grand Reopening Celebration Week
History of the Building
The Stanley Mosk Library and Courts Building opened in 1928 as part of the Capitol Extension Group. Designed by the San Francisco architectural firm of Weeks and Day, it is considered one of the finest examples of neo-classical design in the West. Its classic granite and terra cotta fašade are matched by its majestic interior containing magnificent murals by Maynard Dixon and Frank Van Sloun, a marble staircase and columns, decorative coffered ceilings and bronze chandeliers.
In 2009, the California Department of General Services began a major renovation of the building to make it safer, more accessible, and more energy efficient, while preserving its architectural integrity. The work is now complete, and the building has been restored to its original grandeur and has been updated with 21st century technology.
