Section 5: Library Staff
Report figures as of the last day of the reporting year.
Counting People
5.1 Total number of full-time employees
Use your library’s definition of “full-time” and count heads/people. Each person employed counts as one, whether they are employed full or part time.
5.2 Total number of part-time employees
Use your library’s definition of “part-time” and count heads/people. Each person employed counts as one, whether they are employed full or part time.
5.3 Total count of persons employed
Automatically calculated. Total count of all persons employed in library and support services, funded in the library’s budget, full-time and part-time, as of June 30, 2024.
5.4 Total number of volunteers (count heads)
Enter the number of people who volunteered in your library during the reporting year. Count heads/people.
5.5 Volunteer hours
Total number of hours worked by all volunteers in the reporting year.
Full-Time Equivalents
FTE stands for “full-time equivalent.” It is used to count the hours worked in your library, rather than the employees. To ensure comparable data, 40 hours a week has been set as the measure of FTE for this survey. If you do not have FTE readily available from your HR department, you will need to calculate the FTE.
Add the total number of budgeted hours worked by all people and divide by 40 (if you are using hours worked in a week) or by 2080 (if you are using hours worked in the reporting year.
Example:
- Sam: 40 hours per week
- Pat: 30 hours per week
- Val: 20 hours per week
- Kai: 40 hours per week
- Ali: 10 hours per week
Total: 40+30+20+40+10=140/40=3.5FTE
Report figures as of the last day of the fiscal year. Include all positions funded in the library’s budget whether those positions are filled or not.
5.6 Total FTE for Librarians with an MLS degree
Total FTE for Librarians with master’s degrees from programs of library and information studies accredited by the American Library Association.
5.7 Total FTE Librarians without an MLS degree
Total FTE of librarians without MLS degrees. These are employees who do paid work that usually requires professional training and skill in the theoretical or scientific aspects of library work, or both, as distinct from its mechanical or clerical aspect.
5.8 Total FTE for All Other Paid Staff
Total FTE for all other paid staff. This includes all other FTE employees paid from the reporting unit budget, including plant operations, security, and maintenance staff.
5.9 Total FTE for all employees
This is an auto-calculated sum.
