Make an appointment

The BTBL Reading Room is open to visitors by appointment only. Visitors must agree to follow COVID-19 safety precautions. Appointments must be made 24 hours in advance; patrons are limited to one appointment per day.

BTBL is located on the first floor of the California State Library building at 900 N Street in downtown Sacramento. Our entrance is on the south side of N Street and is approximately 400 feet west of the intersection of 10th and N streets. As you enter the building’s lobby, head to the far left side of the lobby to our Reading Room in Suite 100.

Our Reading Room is open to all members of the public and features:

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • 2 Closed-Circuit Magnifiers (CCTVs)
  • Stand-alone Kurzweil reading machine
  • Perkins Braillers
  • Tactile board games
  • Tactile maps
  • Children’s Corner
  • Browsing collection of audio and braille books for BTBL patrons
  • Small print collection of books related to disabilities
  • Large-print reference materials (dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanac, etc.)
  • Artwork by BTBL patrons
  • Gregory Kondos painting and bronze bas-relief reproduction of On The Sacramento River

In addition, two accessible computers are available for use by persons with print disabilities and feature:

  • Braille translation software that allows a user to print braille documents using an attached or networked braille embosser: Duxbury 11.1

Free Matter Postage

Any book order forms or typed large-print correspondence (not handwritten) sent to the library via U.S. mail should ship postage-free. Any of the library’s books, machines or equipment sent to the library via U.S. mail should ship postage-free. Simply write “Free Matter for the Blind” in the upper right-hand corner, where the stamp would go. Leave paper letters unsealed to comply with postal regulations.

Public Transportation

We are located approximately two blocks from regional Transit light rail stops at 8th and O and at Archives Plaza. Several RT regular and commuter buses come within a few blocks of our location. Regional Transit customer service is available at (916) 321-2877 or you can find routes and schedule information at sacrt.com.

Parking

Metered parking is available on-street or in nearby parking garages. Most metered parking now accepts credit cards as payment in addition to traditional coin payment. Vehicles that display the proper disabled placard or license plates can park free of charge in on-street metered spaces. There is a passenger loading zone near the entrance of the building’s lobby along the south side of N Street midway between 9th and 10th streets.
