FDLP eXchange
The California State Library and GPO are pleased to utilize FDLP eXchange.
California’s implementation of the FDLP eXchange tool to facilitate the withdrawal of FDLP material from collections began on December 1, 2021. Libraries in the state of California were invited to attend one or more FDLP eXchange training sessions before implementation. The sessions were an opportunity to learn the basics of FDLP eXchange.
The following GPO staff were on hand to guide viewers through the tool and to answer questions:
- Joe Paskoski, Outreach Librarian, GPO, Federal Depository Support Services (FDSS), Library Services and Content Management (LSCM)
- Kathy Bayer, Outreach Librarian, GPO, Federal Depository Support Services (FDSS) , Library Services and Content Management (LSCM)
- Abby McDermott, Collection Development Librarian, GPO, Library Technical Services (LTS), Library Services and Content Management (LSCM)
- Lisa Russell, Program Analyst and FDLP eXchange Project Manager, GPO, Library Services and Content Management (LSCM)
A total of 4 sessions were offered. These sessions were recorded and are available for review.
- November 17, 2021, 10:00–11:30 Pacific time
- November 18, 2021, 10:00–11:30 Pacific time
- November 22, 2021, 10:00–11:30 Pacific time
- December 7, 2021, 10:00–11:30 Pacific time
Note that the fourth session was held after California libraries implemented FDLP eXchange. It was an opportunity to ask questions that may have arisen while doing work in the live FDLP eXchange site.
FDLP eXchange Frequently Asked Questions
When did the California State Library implement FDLP eXchange?
The California State Library implemented FDLP eXchange on December 1, 2021.
Where can I read more about FDLP eXchange?
You may read more about FDLP eXchange through the Federal Depository Library Program’s webpage.
Why did the California State Library implement FDLP eXchange?
The California State Library implemented FDLP eXchange because we believe that the platform built by the Government Publishing Office and the Federal Depository Library Program offers better and faster service for Federal Depository libraries in California and thus lead to better service to the patrons of these libraries. Examples of the benefits are:
- FDLP eXchange is supported financially by the FDLP program
- Needs and Offers matches are automatic
- Listing items on CALDOC-L will no longer be necessary.
I am a California selective Federal Depository Library; do I need to sign up for FDLP eXchange?
We recommend that all California selective Federal Depository Libraries sign up for FDLP eXchange. FDLP eXchange is used for all disposal items. It is also where you can review items posted by other California selective libraries and offers posted nationally.
How do I sign up for FDLP eXchange?
If you never received FDLP eXchange login information or have forgotten your login details, you may request updated credentials through ASKGPO.
Where can I access FDLP eXchange?
The California State Library used to limit disposal lists to 100 items on a list and 5 lists a month. Are these same limits in place in FDLP eXchange?
The California State Library is still requesting that libraries limit their submissions to 500 items/lines a month due to the large number of selectives in California. We are requesting that selectives submit items using the FDLP eXchange spreadsheet template with less than 250 items at a time due to the error checking limitations of the spreadsheet.
Does the California State Library still use CALDOC-L?
Yes, CALDOC-L is still utilized by the California Depository Library Program and is also used by the Federal Depository Library Program at the California State Library for news and updates.
Do I still have to use CALDOC-L to submit lists after they have been reviewed by the California State Library?
No, by using FDLP eXchange, items submitted will automatically be sent to Phase II review (selective review) within FDLP eXchange.
I see from your disposal list instructions that there are materials to offer California’s selectives that do not need to be reviewed by the California State Library; how is that done in FDLP eXchange?
Since we are utilizing FDLP eXchange as opposed to CALDOC-L for other California selectives to review, items have to be reviewed by the California State Library first. To list an item in FDLP eXchange that the California State Library does not need to review but that you would like to offer to California selectives, please provide the following detail in the note field of FDLP eXchange: “California_Selective_Offer_NOT_FOR_CSL_REVIEW.” The California State Library will pass this item as soon as possible and move the item into Phase II – selective review.
