Governor’s Mansion Photograph Collection

State Agency Partner: Governor’s Mansion State Historic Park, Capital District, California State Parks

DCP collaborated with the Governor’s Mansion State Historic Park to digitize a series of 171 black and white photographs from Governor Edmund G. “Pat” Brown’s inaugural year, when he became the 32nd governor of California. The photographs document his 1959 inauguration, two inaugural balls, and a visit to the California State Fair.

Brown family members are featured throughout the collection including future Governor Edmund Gerald “Jerry” Brown, Jr., and future California State Treasurer Kathleen Brown. Other notable images include movie star Ann Miller, singer Nat King Cole, Supreme Court Justice Phil Gibson, outgoing Governor Goodwin Knight, newly-elected Lieutenant Governor Glenn Anderson, State Controller Alan Cranston, San Francisco District Attorney Tom Lynch, Attorney General Stanley Mosk, and more.

DCP is currently working on two more exciting digitization projects in partnership with the California State Railroad Museum:

  • Beebe and Clegg Negative Collection: Approximately 4,000 photographic negatives taken by iconic rail photographers Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg over the course of their professional careers, from the 1920s to the 1960s. The images are primarily focused on steam and early diesel trains and were taken all across the United States.
  • Southern Pacific Employee Timetables: 67 bound volumes of timetables that date from 1892-1968 and include information for railroad employees about the operation of freight and passenger trains, scheduled arrivals and departures, signal signs, stations and flag stops for passenger trains, division maps, and much more.
