California Public Libraries Statistics

The California Public Libraries Survey provides annual statistics about libraries’ finances, services, programs, and collections. State Libraries across the United States administer the survey and report data to the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The Public Libraries Survey provides statistics on the status of public libraries across the United States. It has been conducted since 1988 has been described as the backbone of research, analysis, and policy discussions about the current state of public libraries.

Tables of California public libraries’ statistics from the last five reporting years may be accessed below. The full data sets are available, and there are smaller tables with more specific subjects. The California library data element definitions document is available to provide more specific information about column headings, and results may be filtered by year and subject.
